Professor Campistol received his MD from the University of Barcelona, Spain in 1983. He then continued in Barcelona, first as a resident in Internal Medicine at the Hospital Clinic and then as a fellow in Renal Medicine. His doctoral thesis, which he obtained in 1990, was on the “Pathogenesis of dialysis-amyloidosis and the role of lymphocytes on β2-microglobulin synthesis and dialysis membranes”. He held a Visiting Fullbright Scholarship in the Arthritis Center in the School of Medicine at Boston University in 1991–1992.
Professor Campistol is currently Director of the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona. He is also Professor of Medicine and a staff member in the Renal Transplant Unit in the Hospital Clinic, both at the University of Barcelona. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed experimental and clinical papers. Professor Campistol is a member of many international transplant societies, and is on the editorial board of major international transplant journals.
